As we celebrate Reading Month, an exciting new chapter is taking shape at the Rockford Freshman Center. Construction is actively underway on the media center, a space designed to inspire curiosity, support collaboration, and foster a lifelong love of learning. From updated layouts to modern finishes, every detail is being thoughtfully built to create an environment where students can explore, connect, and grow.
Systems Gate
A new gated enclosure designed to house essential systems, such as the chiller, transformer, and generator, is now secured with the installation of a gate. This space protects critical infrastructure that supports the long-term performance and efficiency of the facility. In addition, a new electrical room has been constructed to further strengthen building operations and accommodate updated systems that will serve the Freshman Center well into the future.

Media Center Transformation
Inside, the media center is undergoing a full renovation that will completely reimagine how students use the space. A temporary wall is currently in place as construction progresses on a layout that will feature four open study rooms, a central reception desk, and dedicated office and workroom areas. New bulkheads and lighting are being installed to enhance both function and feel. A newly constructed corridor, connected to the one completed last month, will create three convenient access points into the media center, improving flow and accessibility. New ramps and fire doors are also being added as part of this connection, along with nearby student and staff restrooms to support the updated space.

Technology & Server Room Upgrades
Behind the scenes, upgrades are taking place to support the district’s technology infrastructure. The MDF/server room, which serves the entire Rockford district, is being carefully protected throughout construction. Specialized plastic barriers and monitoring systems are in place to track pressure, moisture, and temperature, ensuring sensitive equipment remains secure. Crews are also installing two new rooftop units (RTUs), removing outdated ductwork and air conditioning systems, and making layout adjustments, including relocating a door to improve functionality.
Courtyard Improvements
The courtyard outside the media center will also being reimagined as weather allows. Existing concrete, trees, and benches will be demolished to prepare the space for a full refresh. Plans include new turf installation this summer. Additionally, updated metal paneling has been installed on the building façade within the courtyard. These improvements not only enhance functionality but also create a more modern, flexible outdoor area that complements the new media center and provides students with additional space to gather and learn.

As these updates come together, it’s exciting to see how each piece contributes to a better experience for students and staff. From the media center to the spaces behind the scenes, this project is all about creating an environment where people can learn, connect, and thrive. We look forward to sharing more progress as this new chapter continues to unfold.
