A New Chapter for Rockford Freshman Center

It’s amazing what a little time — and a lot of work — can do.

The last time we visited the Rockford Freshman Center, the Media Center was all bare brick, raw concrete and exposed framework. Mechanical systems and ductwork were still visible overhead, and it was a little hard to imagine what the finished space would look like.

Today, the Freshman Center is complete — and the difference is pretty remarkable.

The Media Center has been transformed into a bright, welcoming space made for students. Large windows bring in plenty of natural light, while comfortable seating gives students places to settle in with a good book. Tables and group spaces provide room for collaboration, studying and all the activity that comes with a busy school day. The shelves are now being filled with books, putting the finishing touch on a space ready to welcome students.

Just outside, the courtyard has received a facelift of its own. The existing tree was removed and new turf was installed, opening up the space and creating a wide-open, welcoming area for students and staff.

Throughout the building, other pieces of the project are coming together as well.

The improvements extend throughout the building. Two new office spaces were added to the staff offices, giving the team additional dedicated space to work and support students.

After nearly two years without them, the ceiling tiles are finally back in place. Hidden above them is an important upgrade that students and staff will appreciate during the warmer months: new piping that supplies air conditioning to each classroom.

One of the corridors now features acoustic baffling designed to absorb sound and reduce the echo that comes with busy hallways. It’s one of those details that may not immediately stand out, but will make a noticeable difference when students are moving from classroom to classroom.

The two single bathrooms are now finished, complete with bright new tile. In the boiler room, the installation of four new tankless water heaters is currently underway.

Work is moving along at the high school, too. New bleachers have been installed, and the elevator mechanical systems have been refurbished.

From a Media Center ready to welcome students to classrooms with air conditioning and refreshed spaces throughout the building, these improvements are all about creating a better place for students and staff to learn, work and spend their days. We’re excited to see the final pieces come together and, most importantly, to see these spaces filled with the people they were built for.
